Women's Leadership Council: Message From The Chair

Florence Shorenstien
FLO SCHORNSTEIN, CHAIR
  • Established in 2002 by 50 women leaders, the Women’s Leadership Council of United Way has grown to include 500 members who seek to address the unique health and human service needs of women and children in the region through philanthropy, service, and advocacy. We have created Success By 6 to focus on the importance of quality, affordable child care. Our public policy events address our mission and bring to our audiences expert and inspiring presenters. Through our advocacy, we have been instrumental at the State level in the implementation of the Quality Rating System for child care centers and the passage in the State Legislature of School Readiness Tax Credits for child care providers, staff, and families.

  • Hurricane Katrina and the collapse of the levees have increased the challenges we all face as a community and as individuals. With our focus on the rebuilding of the child care industry, the Women’s’ Leadership Council and Success By 6 are determined to continue their efforts to enhance the quality of life for women and children with improvements to the delivery of child care services that provide better care from better trained staff in better equipped facilities and which enable families to return to the area.

  • It is a privilege to lead the Women’s Leadership Council at this critical time in our city . It is an honor to work along side fellow leaders whose determination and commitment to the goals and objectives of our organization  will enable us to continue on our path of success and accomplishment.
