2009 Accomplishments

Since 2002, the WLC has committed over $500,000 and countless hours to raising the standards for quality child care and rebuilding child care facilities after Hurricane Katrina.

We have also committed $25,000 annually towards a Government Relations position to move forward a legislative agenda focused on children, and most recently, successfully advocated for statewide Pre-K for all 4 year-olds, regardless of family income, who want to be served.

We have committed $81,000 annually for three years to the Nurse Family Partnership, a program that connects a registered nurse with a young expectant mother and her family from pregnancy until the child is two years old, leading to decreased risk-taking behaviors during pregnancy, improved child health and development, and improved economic self-sufficiency for the entire family.

By the suggestion of our Northshore affiliate chapter, we have committed $31,000 to the Children’s Museum of St. Tammany, which will be designated for an area dealing with early childhood education.

Our 2009 Healh Care Partner, Touro Infirmary, works with the WLC to provide events for our members, which address health issues that affect women and children. Touro also provides free seminars and screenings at the hospital each month for all members.

In May, the WLC once again co-hosted Women’s Rebuild Week with the St. Bernard Project, where over 200 volunteers from around the country rebuilt over 15 devastated homes in St. Bernard Parish.

Our WINGs members have partnered with Dress for Success New Orleans to collect lightly-worn purses and accessories for women trying to enter the workforce. They also co-hosted a fundraiser with the St. Bernard project to help raise $10,000 for the organization.

Our 2009 Public Policy Partner, St. Charles Surgical Hospital, is assisting with our state-wide advocacy efforts for women and children, as well as providing our members with leadership trainings and opportunities.
