New Orleans Saints Quarterback Drew Brees is proving to be a hero both on and off the field.  Brees and his wife Brittany helped celebrate the ribbon cutting ceremony of Royal Castle Child Development Center.  Brees’ Dream Foundation teamed up with the the Greater New Orleans Rebuild Child Care Collaborative (GNORCCC) and Operation Kids to emphasize the importance of the need of child care in New Orleans.

The GNORCCC is rebuilding and upgrading child care centers in southeast Louisiana.  Brees’ Operation Kids: Rebuilding Dreams in New Orleans campaign contributed more than $72,000 to the rebuild of the Royal Castle Child Development Center.

“Brittany and I were eager to get involved in community rebuilding upon moving here, especially with an issue as important as child care,” said Brees before taking a tour of the newly completed Royal Castle facility renovations.

Flooding from Hurricane Katrina wiped out over 80% of the licensed child care facilities in the City of New Orleans. The current child care shortage is slowing economic recovery in the New Orleans region; with no childcare, New Orleans parents can not work.  GNORCC is implementing a key strategy to overcome the challenges that families face in finding available, affordable, and high-quality child care.

The objectives of the GNORCCC project are to:

  • Facilitate the opening of 10 to 15 child care centers within the next twelve months through rebuilding or new construction
  • Create 1,000 child care spaces that do not now exist, with 50% of those spaces reserved for low-income children whose families are eligible to participate in the State of Louisiana’s Child Care Assistance Plan (CCAP)
  • Conduct rebuilding in accordance with accreditation standards specified by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)
  • Enable each center receiving a Rebuild Child Care grant to achieve at least three stars on the State of Louisiana’s new Quality Rating System (QRS)
