‘Family Reunion’ joins United Way
Volunteer Project to Help New Orleans Kids

On January 15, the Ramapo Family, a group of people that work together at Camp Ramapo for Children in Rhinebeck, New York, held a special volunteer day during the 3rd Annual Ramapo Family Reunion. The group repainted the playground, classrooms and a nearby home that is being turned into a community center at Hume Child Development Center, a United Way Community Partner Agency.

Camp Ramapo, a summer program, serves children with special needs. Ramapo also offers professional staff training and acts as a place to retreat, learn and grow. For the last three years, people associated with the camp have joined together for an annual “Family Reunion.” The group travels each year to a different destination; this year, they decided on New Orleans.

Twenty to forty people came from all over the world – most come from a human service background – and took part in the community service project, as is part of the group’s tradition. “One of the common themes at Camp Ramapo is to ‘leave camp a better place,’ says Ramapo Volunteer Coordinator Susan Zimmerman. “We want to do the same in New Orleans.” Zimmerman contacted United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area to help make this vision happen.
