“CHEERS FOR VOLUNTEERS” at Zephyrs
United Way Campaign Kickoff a Success
On Wednesday, July 28, United Way supporters celebrated “Cheers for Volunteers,” the annual community-wide kick-off, and cheered as the New Orleans Zephyrs beat the Memphis Redbirds.
Fans enjoyed free second-line handkerchiefs signed by New Orleans trumpeter Jeremy Davenport, who performed the national anthem with saxophonist Aaron Fletcher, and feasted on $1 hot dogs all night. 2010 United Way Campaign Chair Barbara Turner Windhorst, threw out the first pitch, with a little help from Kingsley House preschooler Jayden Jackson.
To start the 2010-2011 Campaign off swinging, Ron Maestri, Ron Swoboda and Mike Schline of the New Orleans Zephyrs presented Windhorst, as well as United Way COO Michael Williamson, with a check for over $5,600 from the Zephyrs' 2010 BaseBOWL tournament and proceeds from the night’s game.
Adding to the night’s fun, ten United Way contributors, each 1% givers, had the chance to win a brand new Honda FIT from Royal Honda. The lucky drawing winner was Candi Vigo of Fidelity Homestead Savings Bank.
United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area raised $22.2 million in the 2009-2010 Campaign Season, and is currently funding 129 health and human service programs at 74 agencies in our seven-parish region.
With the community’s support, the United Way team hits it out of the park for the Greater New Orleans Area.
